“Women! You are wanted at the wheel!
In 1939 London County Council ARP (Air Raid Precautions) specifically targeted their recruitment campaign at middle-class women drivers.
“Women who can drive a car and have a little spare time – you are urgently wanted for London’s Volunteer Ambulance Service.. This is surely the form of national service for which women are especially suited…”
But the service was permanently understaffed, desperate for new recruits, and once the war started and none of the expected bombing happened, people began to wonder what the point of ARP was. Until the night of 7 September 1940, the so-called “first night of the London Blitz.”
